The state may refuse to grant a license if a student has been convicted of a crime; committed any act involving dishonesty, fraud, or deceit; or committed any act that, if committed by a licentiate of the business or profession in question, would be grounds for the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations (DPOR) to deny licensure. state licensing requirements
To become a licensed cosmetologist, barber, master barber, nail technician, or wax technician in Virginia, you must meet the following requirements:
- Disclose any felony convictions within 10 years of the application date
- Provide copies of any disciplinary action taken in Virginia or other jurisdictions
- Disclose your physical address
- Sign a statement certifying that you have read and understand the Virginia barber and cosmetology license laws
- Pass the board-approved written and practical exam
- Exam Eligibility requires completion of an approved training program
- Submit a license application and fee
These licenses require renewal every two years.
